In 2007, nineteen people joined the first class of Leadership Vallejo.
Leadership Vallejo is modeled on an established, nationwide program of community leadership, development and
training. It will identify, educate, and train individuals interested in community organizations, and becoming the
future leaders of their community. A criteria for each member was to focus on a community project of their choice.
Realizing the importance, potential and the historical nature of Tennessee Street, Chris Dominguez, Clark Blasdell, Jack
Kane, Maria Guevara, Michelle Morgan, Misty Ismail, and Sandi Stowes came together and formed Team Tennessee.
With the goal to help restore Vallejo's pride in its past and hopes for its future by means of an action
affecting the improvement of Tennesee St. from the Mare Island Causeway to the I-80, Team Tennessee committed to surveying
resident and business owners, on 20 blocks from Mare Island to I-80.
Off they went, one by one, knocking on each and every door on Tennessee Street. Leaving no door behind, the people they
met greeted them with a mixture of emotions. Many were relieved, grateful, excited, hopeful, and positive about
the efforts being undertaken while others were angry, indifferent, cold and wanted nothing to do with the project.
Understanding each reaction, Team Tennessee prevailed and gathered all the information they could get. By April 30, 2008,
the surveys were completed.
